I have been wanting to write about L’s birth for a long time and I recently had the chance to catch up with her family when they joined our last class to share about their birth and postpartum journey. It’s hard to believe that it has been seven months since this little chunk made her posterior acynclitic way into the world!
J and S took my Birthing from Within class and hired me as their doula. I had the opportunity to visit them several times at their home for prenatal massages, make up classes, and our prenatal visits. They seemed sure and committed that they wanted to have an unmedicated childbirth but they were also the least serious of all the couples in my class. I often heard them giggling to a private joke during pain coping, but they hung in there with the birth art and sharing and we always enjoyed our time together. Through our visits I got to know them as a couple, not just how they wanted to birth but all about their lives. I don’t always have the opportunity to get to know the families I work with in this way, but it is lovely when it clicks!
J went into labor several days before her due date a week before Christmas which was very polite! Her husband called and I could hear her laughing in the background, her contractions were 9 minutes apart. Continue reading
